General description of the region
Spanning the Talamanca Mountain Range across the provinces of Limón, Puntarenas, and San José. Key access points include San Gerardo de Dota, Cerro de la Muerte, Las Tablas, and La Amistad National Park.
From <500 meters in the lowlands to 3,820 meters at Cerro Chirripó. Key birding zones occur between 1,500–3,000 meters.

- Páramo: Cold and windy, with freezing temperatures possible year-round
Ranges from 30°C (lowlands) to 0–10°C in highland areas and páramo. Fog and humidity are constant in montane zones.

Elevations above 2,500 meters host endemic-rich habitats filled with epiphytes, moss, and Quercus trees.
