General description of the region
Caño Negro is located in northern Costa Rica, close to the Nicaraguan border, within the province of Alajuela. It forms part of the Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge, a critical wetland ecosystem in the country.
The region is lowland, ranging from 30 to 100 meters above sea level.
Tropical climate characterized by high humidity and marked seasonal variation. The area experiences heavy rainfall during the wet season (May to November) and prolonged droughts during the dry season (December to April).
Warm throughout the year, with averages between 25°C and 34°C (77–93°F).
Recognized as a Ramsar site, the wetlands fill during the rainy season and partially dry out in summer.
Areas used for grazing and habitat for seed-eating birds and waders.
Include rice fields and pasture, creating a matrix for adaptable and migratory species.
Including the Río Frío, which winds through the refuge and supports abundant aquatic life.
